LWP- Hannah's House-Thursday 9/13 noon-1pm at 625 N. Walnut
Join us & check out Hannah's House, a new place for us, doing great things for pregnant women in our area! They are a transitional living shelter providing pregnant women with housing, supportive programs, and spiritual guidance during the pregnancy and up to (9) months after the baby is born. Hannah's House is open to all pregnant, adult, women ages 18 or older in need, regardless of race, religious beliefs, or financial status. We provide women with a safe, comfortable home where they can gain the spiritual, physical, and emotional strength to parent their child and work toward self-sufficiency or make an adoption plan. Our average resident stays for approximately 11 months. Each resident is mentored during her stay at Hannah's House, and many seek mentoring after they leave our shelter and continue to receive baby clothes, diapers, emergency food, and ongoing emotional, material, and spiritual care.
They need a hand getting their newsletter and invitation for their International Dessert and Silent Auction fundraiser out and would be so incredibly excited if LWP could come out Thursday to help them get this done.

Our Mission
Haven House provides emergency housing and support services for one-parent and two-parent families with children. The shelter helps families who are homeless prepare for permanent housing by developing and promoting self-sufficiency, stability, and financial responsibility.
Join us in helping them serve our community!!! There is cleaning, folding & organizing to be done to make their jobs easier- & we all know it is MUCH more fun to do those things somewhere besides your own home ;)
Can't make it? Check them out at www.havenhouseel.org & see how you may be able to get involved & always check www.lunchwithapurpose.com for LOTS of great volunteer opportunities!!!
Community service has taught me all kinds of skills and increased my confidence. You go out there and think on your feet, work with others and create something from nothing. That's what life's all about.

LWP- Black Child & Family Institute Moving Party- June 28th 12-1pm
You may have heard that the building on Genesee is being closed permanently on June 30. On that date we will officially terminate our lease with the Lansing School District. The building has too many physical problems and we must close for health and safety reasons. Our temporary office will be at Foster Center, where we are holding our Freedom School this summer.
This is not bad news! Please keep in mind that only the building is closing. BCFI is still alive and well. We are looking at a location for this fall and, if it comes to fruition, I am sure that you will be pleased and there will be space for our friends, like you, to use, who also are working hard to 'save' our children and families.
In the meantime, we need your help in closing the building. We are in the process of packing boxes, identifying what will stay, what will be moved and where items will be stored. If you can give us an hour or more of time next week, we would be very grateful. If you can organize a group of youth who may be able to move boxes, etc., that would be very helpful. SO LET"S HELP :)

LWP- Habitat for Humanity- June 21st 12-1pm Re-Store 1941 Benjamin Dr. Lansing
Let's help Habitat for Humanity organize thier resale outlet which accepts donated goods that are sold to the general public at a fraction of the retail price. The proceeds help local Habitat affiliates fund the construction of Habitat homes within their communities.
In the United States alone, 95 million people have housing problems
That’s one third of the nation. These problems include payments too large a percentage of their income, overcrowding, poor quality shelter and homelessness.(4) Throughout the world, people live in inadequate housing, and Habitat for Humanity is dedicated to providing decent, affordable homes for those in need.
They get lots of volunteers to build houses but need volunteers like us to get the behind the scenes work done making that possible! Join us in helping out this great organization =)

Note from the Volunteer Coordinator...
We will be distributing our June/July edition of the neighborhood newsletter beginning next week, May 21st, through May 31st. I know Lunch With A Purpose has come and been a lifesaver before! I'd love to have help in the coming weeks if people are available for either folding or delivery-- delivery will hopefully be a nice task in the warm weather!
This is our biggest edition yet and we'll need more volunteers than normal. We will be distributing further than our typical area--this time going north of Michigan Ave in the neighborhoods between MI Ave and Vine St, as well as our typical route in the neighborhoods along Kalamazoo.
Of course we can :) Join us Thursday noon-1pm or email Kristina Adair <kristinaa@allenneighborhoodcenter.org> to help another time & make a difference!

Whether you're for the war or against it, we all support our troops.
Join LWP this week as we remember the men and women stationed overseas. LWP will be at Bigby on Allegan to make cards and write notes to those in our armed forces. We are going through 'A Million Thanks...' to send our letters and show our appreciation.
"The monotony of everyday work here is broken up by letters and packages from home. We are all like little boys on Christmas morning when mail arrives. It is so crazy seeing grown men brought to tears when mail arrives. We're talking battle hardened men, tearing up at the very site of scribbled pictures of the crayon medium, signed by their little artists back home." -PFC Ryan Paulton (currently stationed in Afghanistan)

H.O.P.E. Scholarship Mailing
Thursday, October 13 · 12:00pm - 1:00pm
Join us in helping to give local youth a chance to be college educated & change the world!!!
Project: Mail out information regarding the HOPE Scholarship program.
WHAT IS THE H.O.P.E. SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAM?
(Helping Other People Excel)
The H.O.P.E. Scholarship Program is an education initiative in cooperation with the Lansing School District, the City of Lansing , Lansing Community College, Michigan State University, the Lansing Police Department, and in cooperation with local businesses and private citizens.
The H.O.P.E. Scholarship Program offers Lansing School District youth an opportunity for a college education and a brighter future. Students are initiated into the program as sixth graders. Students promise to finish high school in exchange for two years of free tuition at Lansing Community College. The students are chosen by their school based on their ability to utilize the program.
The H.O.P.E. Scholarship Program was developed to assist Lansing School District youth in their commitment to graduate from high school and go onto college. When former Chief Mark Alley was appointed by former Mayor David Hollister, he instructed his staff to develop youth crime prevention initiatives. Out of numerous ideas that were tabled, Chief Alley identified a program in the Jackson area currently in use called CARE (Concerned Adults Responding Early). Taking the concepts used in the CARE program and modifying the ideas to fit the City of Lansing, the team of Chief Mark Alley, former Mayor David C. Hollister, former Superintendent Dr. E. Sharon Banks of the Lansing School District, and former President Paula D. Cunningham of Lansing Community College formed this scholarship program in 2001.
Today this partnership continues with the leadership of Lansing School District Superintendent of Schools, Mayor Virgil Bernero, Lansing Dr. T.C. Wallace, Jr., Superintendent of Schools, Lansing Community College President, Dr. Brent Knight, and current Chief Teresa Szymanski. Everyone working together is what is needed to ensure the success of our H.O.P.E. Scholarship Program.

To new parents and parents to be we are an educational and resource center. Here they earn diapers, cribs, clothing and other baby needs by taking classes and watching parenting and life skill videos.
So let's roll up our sleaves & help them get ready for summer in all the wonderful work that they do =) Info at www.sharedpregnancy.org

World Mission Thrift
What: World Mission Thrift
When: WEDNESDAY, January 26th- 12pm
Where: 5400 S. Cedar St. (attached to K-Mart)
Lansing, MI
World Mission was founded in 1994 with a vision to impact the world for Christ. The organization made a profound impact in many evangelistic and humanitarian mission projects around the world.
A great need was discovered while they ministered to the physical needs of thousands of people around the world. A need based on the understanding that the MAJORITY of these people were completely illiterate. That truth drove them to the place of providing God’s Word for these people in a format that was appropriate considering their oral culture.
As a result, they have distributed more than 80,000 audio Bibles around the world. Groups of 12 or more people gather around to listen to these audio Bibles on a regular basis. Today they use a solar powered tool called The Treasure which is available in more than 5,000 languages. They partner with churches and mission organizations to help reach these oral learners living in every country of the world. Many of their units go to ‘unreached people groups’ who have never heard the gospel before.
Join Lunch with a Purpose Wednesday, January 26th at World Mission's thrift store which helps to fund their outreach projects. We will be cleaning and organizing after their annual sale.

However, due to her own determination and help from Nyaka, she is now on a path to economic empowerment, helping her family break free from the cycle of poverty. Thanks to a micro-finance loan from Nyaka, Matrida has been able to buy supplies to make beautiful woven baskets as a source of income. And, all of her grandchildren have attended Nyaka School.

Ronald McDonald House
What: Ronald McDonald House
When: Thursday, November 4, 2010
Where: 121 S. Holmes
Lansing, MI
Back to our roots at the Ronald McDonald house!
The Ronald McDonald House program provides a “home-away-from-home” for families so they can stay close by their hospitalized child at little or no cost. The houses are built on the simple idea that nothing else should matter when a family is focused on healing their child – not where they can afford to stay, where they will get their next meal or where they will lay their head at night to rest.
Families are stronger when they are together, which helps in the healing process. By staying at a Ronald McDonald House, parents also can better communicate with their child’s medical team and keep up with complicated treatment plans when needed. They can also focus on the health of their child, rather than grocery shopping, cleaning or cooking meals.
When your child is sick, you want the best care possible - even if it is hundreds or thousands of miles away. The Ronald McDonald House allows families to access specialized medical treatment by providing a place to stay at little or sometimes no cost.
Join us Thursday November 4th at the Ronald McDonald House to do some yard work, clean the playroom and help out around the house!
